It’s “game on” in Teesside!

In the heart of Middlesbrough’s up-and-coming cultural quarter there’s a small company quietly making a name for itself in the international gaming world. This multi-billion pound industry is not one you would automatically associate with Teesside, but Coatsink are about to change that!

James Arthur may be stealing the limelight at the minute, but he is just the tip of the iceberg where home-grown talent is concerned, there’s a lot more to Teesside than steel works and a Championship football club and Coatsink are leading the way in developing a new, creative and vibrant future for the area’s business community.

Self -confessed geeks Tom Beardsmore and Paul Crabb met at secondary school in Guisborough, and being avid gamers they soon started dreaming of making their own games … fast forward 10 years and this is exactly what they are doing. Paul and Tom both studied at Teesside University and went onto work in the gaming industry; Paul staying local at Atomic Planet and Tom landing a job abroad with Blizzard Entertainment working on titles like World of Warcraft.

One summer an idea for an innovative iPhone game called ‘Pinch’ was born and, with a bit of help from Business Link and the Institute of Digital Innovation at Teesside Uni, the idea became a reality and Coatsink was founded. Pinch became a critical success which meant the boys were approached by various larger companies for consulting and development work and by the end of 2010 they could afford an office in the Graduate Business Unit at Teesside University.

Over the following two years the business went from strength to strength with ‘Pinch 2’ being launched on iPad (on top of contracts), an office move to Boho One, several publishing deals, and a workforce of nine being employed. Pretty impressive for two local lads just doing what they love!

Tom and Paul’s mantra is simple: “Passion comes first everything else is a bonus” and if there is one thing you can say about Teessiders,  it’s that we are not lacking in  passion! This year has seen Coatsink busier than ever with many titles ever so close to release. So next time you download a game on your phone or tablet it might just have been made in Middlesbrough!
