Technical Artist

Coatsink is looking for a highly motivated and talented Technical Artist to join the team in Sunderland, UK. You will work closely with our wider Art team.

As a Technical Artist at Coatsink, you will be required to work within strict timeframes for project deliveries, working within a team, and reporting to your Art Director. You will carry out research, design and the implementation of visual effects that complement the art style of a game. You will be required to act as a bridge between the Artists and Programmers, ensuring art assets can be easily integrated into a game without sacrificing the artistic vision or exceeding the platform’s technical limits.

Technical Artist


  • Acting as a bridge between the Artists and Programmers working on a game

  • Working with your Art Director to iterate on feedback and provide solutions

  • Creation and implementation of real-time effects

  • Use of real-time engines such as Unity

  • Prototyping effects quickly in order to communicate ideas to the Art Director

  • Discussion about, and understanding of, the limitations of the hardware while innovating and pushing the quality of the effects

  • Working closely with environment artists, animators, designers, and engineers to produce an immersive game experience

  • Collaboration with other Artists and Programmers to share techniques, assets, and ideas

  • Active participation in team art discussions, critiques, and reviews


  • Relevant degree

  • Two plus years’ experience as a Technical Artist

  • Good knowledge of one scripting language – Python, C# or Maxscript preferred

  • Understanding of basic programming concept

  • Good knowledge of node based shader authoring

  • Knowledge of 3D Maths (Vectors, Matrices)

  • Knowledge of creating visual effects for video games, compliant with game design and overall artistic vision

  • Ability to communicate cross-discipline and drive improvement across the studio

  • Good knowledge of graphics rendering pipelines and pipeline development

  • Good knowledge of performance implications of game art creation and general technical concepts related to game art

  • Experience with profiling game content to diagnose performance issues

  • Experience with optimizing game content based on own knowledge

  • Knowledge of the 3D Unity pipeline

  • A strong specialism in one area of games art (Modelling, Animation, VFX, Lighting, Shaders)

  • Strong artistic and technical skills in your specialism

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • General knowledge in all game art disciplines

  • Knowledge of shader programming (HLSL/CG)

  • Excellent team skills

  • Willingness to learn and adapt following the needs of a project


  • Two years’ experience in games industry desirable

  • Shipped multiple titles as Technical Artist

  • 3DS Max experience or equivalent

  • Strong Photoshop skills

  • Ability to sketch and express ideas

  • Additional scripting languages

  • Experience with code based shader authoring (HLSL/CG)

  • Experience with node or script based gameplay implementation

  • Ability to create high-quality assets under heavy technical constraints (i.e. assets for mobile)
